Daily press briefing of the Serb National Council of Kosovo and Metohija

Gracanica, July 8, 2000

  • Condemnation of newest attack on Velika Hoca
  • Letter of the Joint Committee on Return for Kosovo Serbs to Oliver Ivanovic
  • CONDEMNATION OF NEWEST ATTACK ON VELIKA HOCA

The SNC KM yet again most strongly condemns the continued mortar attacks on the Serb village of Velika Hoca. This organized terrorism which is being perpetrated by Albanian extremists close to the disbanded KLA clearly demonstrates that the UN mission and KFOR have not disarmed Albanian extremists, and that they continue to wage war against unarmed civilians. It is becoming increasingly apparent that KFOR in some parts of Kosovo is tolerating by its passivity the existence of paramilitary organizations of Kosovo Albanians in violation of all agreements. These attacks serve to further confirm that under these conditions Serbs cannot participate in the process of registration and elections. Even though the Serbs of Orahovac have many times shown the good will to cooperate with Albanians, organized terror against them continues. Last month Nedeljko Kolasinac, the representative of the Orahovac Serbs, publicly apologized to the Albanians for everything they endured during the war, even though many Serb civilians were also killed by the KLA. However, this apology has not helped to change the position of the Albanians toward the Serbs of Orahovac and Velika Hoca.

LETTER OF THE JOINT COMMITTEE ON RETURN FOR KOSOVO SERBS TO OLIVER IVANOVIC

    Pristina, July 7, 2000

    Dear Mr. Ivanovic,

When the decision was made to establish the Joint Committee on Return for Kosovo Serbs (JCR) on 2 May 2000, all co-chairmen of the Committee expressed their sincere wish that the SNC of Mitrovica should also participate in the work of the Committee. In fact the JCR was envisaged as a body which would co-ordinate the activities of UNMIK, UNHCR, OSCE, KFOR and SNC in all parts of Kosovo in order to explore ways and means for the safe and sustainable return of Kosovo Serbs who have left and wish to return to their homes.

Since the return of Kosovo Serbs who fled their homes is a matter of our general concern and cannot be resolved by co-operation of SNC Mitrovica only with local UN and KFOR authorities in Mitrovica area, we once again kindly ask you to reconsider our invitation and join the JCR. In this way we hope that we could all do much more for the people who await our assistance.

    Bernard Kouchner, UNMIK
Bishop Artemije, SNC KM General Juan Ortuno, KFOR Dennis McNamara, UNHCR Daan Everts, OSCE
