  • MEETING OF KTC IN PRISTINA

Today in Pristina the first meeting of the Kosovo Transitional Council (KTC) was held following the return of the Albanian and Serb delegations from Airlie House. At this session the Serb representatives placed special emphasis on the problem of continued ethnically motivated violence against the Serbs, especially in Kamenica, Kosovo Polje and Obilic. Despite the continued victimization of Serbs throughout Kosovo and Metohija, the Serb National Council of Kosovo and Metohija expressed its solidarity with the victimization of a part of the Albanian and Turkish population, especially in the northern part of Mitrovica. Dr. Rada Trajkovic also sharply condemned the attacks on the international police by Serb extremists in Mitrovica. Peace in Kosovo will never be achieved as long as there are those who believe that certain parts or the entire Province should be ethnically clean.

Commenting on the declaration from Airlie, Protosingel Sava emphasized that it represented an obligation for both the leaders in Kosovo and Metohija as well as the international community which must oversee the declaration's implementation. The Albanian representatives in the KTC made special note of the increasingly intense silent war being waged between Rugova's DSK and political parties which originated from the former KLA, especially the PPDK, the party of Hasim Thaci. Kidnappings and political assassination attempts are increasingly frequent occurrences among the Albanians especially on the eve of the upcoming local elections. The majority of Albanians at the meeting, including Mr. Rugova, positively assessed the declaration from Airlie.

SNC DELEGATION IN GNJILANE AND KAMENICA

Today Dusan Ristic and Dragan Velic visited Gnjilane, Kamenica and Vitina as part of a campaign to inform local boards of the SNC throughout the Province and acquaint our people with the content of the declaration from Airlie. At the same time, they delivered invitations to attend the meeting of the SNC to be held in Gracanica on August 6.

GERMAN AND AUSTRIAN GOVERNMENTS TO FINANCE A COLLEGE FOR SERBS IN KOSOVO

Dr. Rada Trajkovic met with Mr. Thomas Dachsner, the UNMIK representative for education, today and he informed the SNC of the intent of the German and Austrian governments to invest money for the establishment of institutions of higher education to meet the needs of Serb young people in Kosovo and Metohija. In the first phase, these governments will contribute 35,000 German marks to be followed by other donations later on. The goal of the SNC is to enable the creation of a modern and contemporary institution of higher education to meet the needs of the Serb people.

VISIT TO THE RUSSIAN CONTINGENT IN SLATINA

Today Dr. Rada Trajkovic and Protosingel Sava visited the Russian airborne division at Slatina Airport where they also attended a military parade celebrating the 70th anniversary of this division. This parade was also attended by the highest representatives of KFOR as well as the head of the FRY Committee for Cooperation with UNMIK, Ambassador Vukicevic. After the parade, Ms. Trajkovic and Father Sava visited the Russian Orthodox field chapel.

SNC GIVEN OFFICES IN UNMIK BUILDING

Today the representatives of the SNC participating in the work of the KTC and the Interim Administrative Council (IAC) of Kosovo were given the use of three offices in the UNMIK building. The SNC will utilize this office space for its permanent representatives who will enable easier organization of contact with international and Kosovo political representatives.

SNC CONDEMNS ATTACKS ON SUVI DO NEAR MITROVICA AND KLA MILITARY EXERCISES IN MACEDONIA

The SNC most strongly condemns the attack by Albanian extremists on the village of Suvi Do near Mitrovica. This most recent attack shows that Albanian extremists from the southern part of the city have no intention of ending their provocations which have the goal of causing a Serb reaction against Albanians in the northern part of the city.

The SNC also expresses its concern due to the military exercises held by the KLA on the Macedonian side of the border with FRY. Maneuvers by uniformed Albanians bearing the insignia of the disbanded KLA clearly show that there is a real possibility of a transfer of conflicts to Macedonia, as well as attacks on the Serb enclave in the area of Brezovica. KFOR will once again be requested to provide better control of the state border with FYR Macedonia and Albania.
