Jessen-Petersen says future status must not mean divisions

BRUSSELS, Feb. 22, 2005 (BETA) - UNMIK head Soren Jessen-Petersen said at a meeting of EU foreign ministers devoted to Kosovo in Brussels on Feb. 21 that Kosovo's future status must not result in the province's division. He added that several ministers supported his view, although it was not officially included in the conclusions issued by the ministers.

Speaking at a news conference the same day, Jessen-Petersen said he is content with efforts by the local authorities in Pristina to enforce international standards. He was responding to a question about his view of the standard implementation process.

Jessen-Petersen also confirmed that in the view of both the EU and U.N., one key democratic standard is the return of Serb refugees to their homes in Kosovo in the wake of the 1999 deployment of NATO forces and violent riots in March 2004. He also said that thus far the return process has made insufficient headway.
