Greek Orthodox Archmandrite from USA pleads for the releas of imprisoned Archbishop Jovan of Ohrid in FYR Maceodonia

It has been 48 days since His Beatitude the Archbishop of Ohrid and Metropolitan of Skopje k. k. Jovan (John) has been imprisoned for second time in the central prison “Idrizovo”. The terror which the Macedonian government, in interaction with the state-sponsored schismatic MOC, has been conducting over its own citizens, not only does it not cease, but it increases in force.

No free society can agree to this scandalized arrest of Archbishop kyr Jovan and persecution of the Orthodox Ohrid Archdiocese - Archmandrite Nektarios Serfes

Archimandrite Nektarios (Serfes) is staying on a two-day visit in Republic of Macedonia. Despite of having problems by the Macedonian police (his American passport was kept and examined at the police station, when entering our country), he speaks optimistically about better times, which are expected by the citizens of Republic of Macedonia.

Archimandrite Nektarios (Serfes) from American Archdiocese of the Patriarchate of Constantinople is familiar to the Macedonian public with his recent statement, given by a telephone call for "Channel 5", TV from the USA.

He, as "Channel 5" broadcast (News, 05.09.2006), compares the arrest of Archbishop kyr kyr Jovan with the atmosphere in the former communist block.

"We are talking about a God’s man who serves the Church and this is a scandal for many people in the world, including America; putting an Archbishop in prison. We have not heard of such a thing. We heard of such things at the times of communism in Russia and other communist countries", declared Archimandrite Nektarios.

"Channel 5" added: "Nektarios is asking from the Macedonian authorities to allow registration of the Jovan’s church. Thus, he is sending his appeal to the new elected Prime Minister, expecting him to solve this question".

During the short breaks among his working arrangements and the visit of our rich cultural and historical heritage, we spoke to father Nektarios very shortly.

Father, how do you see the situation with the arrest of Archbishop kyr kyr Jovan and the persecution of the Orthodox Ohrid Archdiocese?

I find the matter of persecution against Archbishop Jovan and his Archdiocese, especially by the authorities, unfair because they cannot find any truths about his second arrest. No free society can agree to this scandalized arrest of Archbishop kyr kyr Jovan, and therefore the question remains, when the Government will begin to realize that the need is now that Archbishop kyr kyr Jovan and his autonomous Archdiocese deserve and should be granted religious rights to exist and proceed as a free Orthodox Church.

No society can be a free society when it persecutes and discourages religious worship.

Please, give our faithful from Orthodox Ohrid Archdiocese, Your pastoral message.

We should love our God, and each other, even those who hate us. We are and shall remain united with each other through living prayer, fasting and the chalice. Through the prayers of the Mother of God and Sts. Clement and Naum our God will preserve persecution of the Orthodox Ohrid Archdiocese all, and never abandon you because He hears your prayers and loves you!

Tell us shortly about Orthodoxy in the USA.

By the Grace of God, Holy orthodoxy is growing, for there is a spiritual thirst for it. Monastic life, as well as the number of churches, monasteries, for both men and women are growing. More outreach is being done for the needs of the faithful and for the sister churches, both within America and abroad. Orthodoxy now has to be prepared to satisfy these needs and remain ever faithful to its truth.

During his short stay in Republic of Macedonia, Archimandrite Nektarios (Serfes), on September 19, 2006 gave a statement for the news of the TV houses, "Channel 5" and “Sitel”.

The discriminating attitude by the Macedonian police is obvious from the supplement by the "Sitel TV"'s journalist Mr. Marjan Nikolovski, who pointed out that, when entering Republic of Macedonia, “Macedonian authorities kept the American citizen father Nektarios (Serfes) for 15 minutes, after which he was allowed to enter”.

On that occasion, Archimandrite Nektarios made an appeal to the Republic of Macedonia and Macedonian Orthodox Church, which is in doctrine and Eucharist disunity with other sister orthodox churches, to give religious freedom and registration of Orthodox Ohrid Archbishopric.

The "Sitel TV" TV's comment ended with honest intentions of this American citizen that Republic of Macedonia, on its way to Europe will realize the need of respecting religious freedoms.

Holy Synod of the Church of Greece requests urgent release of Archbishop Jovan from prison and requests full respect of relligious rights in Republic of Macedonia

POA Info - September 4, 2006 @ 1:03 pm

After the founding of the new Macedonian Government with the Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski at the head, the first protests against the imprisonment of Archbishop kyr kyr Jovan (John) VI, and against the state persecution of the Orthodox Archdiocese of Ohrid began to arrive.

In the Severe Protest, (http://www.ecclesia.gr/greeknews/default.asp?id=892) at the official Internet presentation of the Church of Greece, an emergent release of Archbishop kyr kyr Jovan (John) VI and respect of the freedom of religious beliefs of the ctizens, members of Orthodox Ohrid Archbishopric have been demanded, as a condition for the European processes of integration.

A protest for Archbishop of Ohrid by the Synod 1/9/2006

On August 30, 2006, the Holy Synod has expressed a severe protest against the new unjustified persecution and imprisonment of Archbishop of Ohrid k.k. Jovan by the state authorities of Skopje.

Holy Synod in the suitable Announcement requires an emergent release of the Hierarch Jovan, thus stating the following: “disallowed behaviour of endless persecutions of the Canonical Archbishop Jovan, against whom charges deprived of logical and objective ground are constantly brought, for which the verdict of innocence has already been reached, and the deprivation of his personal freedom are a clear breaking of the human rights and impermissible deprivation of free practising of his duties as a religious Cleric; a fact making the integration of the state of Skopje not easier but more difficult, in the efforts for its European perspective.

In addition, this makes the following unstable: the necessaries for societal embodiment - prosperity and the progress of the state, also the confidence of the laymen – citizens, representing the Orthodox community of the lone internationally recognized and canonical orthodox Church, in the continuing and certain functioning of the law, thus causing a sharp and serious wound to the state inclinations for maintaining the legal system, for maintaining the human rights and freedom of the citizens, which represent a fact for leaving the European grants determined by the international law and agreed conventions…”

Letter by Bishop Mark of the Orthodox Ohrid Archdiocese to H.H. Patriarcha Pavle of Serbia regarding the second imprisonment of Archbishop Jovan of Ohrid

POA-INFOAugust 10, 2006 @ 10:16 pm

ТО
His Holiness
Archbishop of Pec
Metropolian of Belgrade – Karlovci
Serbian Patriarch
kyr kyr Pavle

Your Holiness,

We write this letter to You being deeply grief-stricken as well as the whole hierarchy, clergy and members of the Orthodox Ohrid Archbishopric are because of the repeatedly imprisonment of our Archbishop, His Beatitude kyr kyr Jovan (John). Namely, he was imprisoned for his second time several days ago, and few months ago he was released from his first imprisonment due to the great pressure of the local churches and the international community. It is renowned that he was confined by the authorities of the Republic of Macedonia many times before. The only guilt of his is that he had brought the Church of the Republic of Macedonia, which was in a condition of many years long schism, into a canonical condition, and thus it has become recognised by all the Orthodox Churches worldwide. The solution of the schism disturbs the authorities of the Republic of Macedonia, because they are the ones who had created it in the times of the communist rule (in 1967) for solely chauvinistic reasons, and they are also bothered by the way the solution of the schism is resolved. That is why they had glaringly interfered in the affairs of the Church and do not stop the terror until nowadays, mostly striking the Archbishop, but also the other Bishops, the clergymen and the faithful people of the Orthodox Ohrid Archbishopric.

At first they had confined the Archbishop Jovan (John) for a few days, then they confined him for 30 days which he had served, and their only goal was to frighten him. Realizing that they failed to do so, they had convicted him to a 2.5 years imprisonment and he served 8 months of that punishment when the Supreme Court of the Republic of Macedonia acquitted hi under the great pressure of the international community. Now they have changed their tactics aiming to present him as if he was a criminal. They convicted him to one year imprisonment as if he was embezzling funds of the Church although he had previously been acquitted by the Court from those charges. Please find enclosed the Encyclical Epistle of the Holy Archpriests’ Synod of the Orthodox Ohrid Archbishopric for explanation on the rigged trial against the Archbishop.

His Beatitude the Archbishop of Ohrid and Metropolitan of Skopje kyr kyr Jovan (John) is once more unjustly convicted and imprisoned. He has proved to be strong in faith and acts so far, and there is no doubt that he would withstand this injustice either. He is aware that his suffering is a victory for the Church thus encouraging all of us to show ourselves worthy for the love of our Lord and Saviour.

However, Your Holiness, as much this letter is an appeal to do everything we can for the release of the unjustly imprisoned Archbishop Jovan (John); it is as much a call to do everything we can for the Orthodox Ohrid Archbishopric to be recognised by the authorities of the Republic of Macedonia. As long as the authorities refuses to recognise the Orthodox Ohrid Archbishopric as one of the religious communities in the Republic of Macedonia, thus violating all the international conventions dealing with freedom of religion our country has acceded, there is a possibility for yet bigger terror, not only against the Archbishop, but also against the other Bishops and members of the Orthodox Ohrid Archbishopric. By not recognising the Orthodox Ohrid Archbishopric, the authorities of the Republic of Macedonia in fact leave space for legitimate terror against the members of the Church. That is why many of our members got frightened and the logic of their way of thinking is the following : “When they could exert such a powerful torture on the Archbishop Jovan (John) who has the support of all the Orthodox Churches and many international institutions dealing with human right, the more they could harm us, even without such transparency and publicity.

Your Holiness, therefore we ask of You and beg of You, do everything in Your power for the legalisation of the Orthodox Ohrid Archbishopric in the Republic of Macedonia. This little country from the southwest Balkans today proves itself as a country that does not observe even the most fundamental human rights, and it seems as if the international community seems tolerates it.

Hoping that our Lord will grant Your prayers, we remain

Faithful to Your love in Christ,
B I S H O P
† Mark, of Bregalnitza and Guardian of Bitola
Member of the Holy Archpriests’ Synod
