Bishop Artemije condemns desecration of church in Obilic

"We are struck by the fact that the international community is attempting to put protective zones in place around [some of] our holy shrines in Kosovo, while other holy shrines are being destroyed," said the Bishop of Raska and Prizren

KOSOVSKA MITROVICA, June 19, 2006 (Tanjug news agency)

Bishop Artemije of Raska and Prizren said on Monday that the desecration of the church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in Obilic is further proof of the determination of extremists and Kosovo institutions to complete the ethnic cleansing of Serbs and to eradicate all traces of everything Serb in Kosovo and Metohija.

Bishop Artemije reminded in a statement for Tanjug that the desecration of the church in Obilic, which recently was left without four crosses, a part of its copper roof and gutters, and had its windows and doors broken is just one of the incidents that occurred.

Last autumn the church of the Holy Virgin of Ljevis (Bogorodica Ljeviska) was desecrated, and this spring the same thing happened in the church in Podujevo, he noted.

"We are also struck by the fact that the international community is attempting to put protective zones in place around [some of] our holy shrines in Kosovo, while other holy shrines are being destroyed," said the Bishop of Raska and Prizren.

He underscored that every holy shrine in Kosovo is of the same value because it is a spiritual center of our people through the centuries, and should remain so in the future.
