Crosses consecrated and placed on church of St. Demetrios the Great-martyr in Mitrovica

Delivering his homily before numerous citizens who gathered for the occasion, His Grace Bishop Artemije of Raska and Prizren said: "This is a great day for all Serbs in Kosovska Mitrovica. May this holy shrine serve all Orthodox faithful that they may regain the strength to survive in this region and overcome all demons and enemies, hidden and unhidden."

Placement of the Holy Cross atop St. Demetrios - under construction in Kosovska Mitrovica

KOSOVSKA MITROVICA, July 24, 2005

On Sunday, July 24, 2005 the crosses were blessed and placed on the newly built church of St. Demetrios the Great-martyr with the assistance of French soldiers within KFOR. Five gold-plated crosses now grace the dome of the almost completed church dedicated to the patron saint and protector of the city of Mitrovica.

The church of St. Demetrios the Great-Martyr is located on an elevation above the northern part of the city [inhabited largely by Serbs and other non-Albanian minorities] and is expected to serve as the main church for Orthodox faithful in the city after the church of St. Sava, located in the southern [exclusively Albanian] part of Mitrovica was torched during last year's March pogrom.

After the recent consecration of a church in Leposavic, this is yet another new Serbian Orthodox church in Kosovo and Metohija where Christian life goes on despite the tragic fact that 150 (one hundred and fifty) Orthodox churches and monasteries have been heavily damaged or completely wiped out during the past six years.

In addition to building these new churches for the use of its faithful, the Serbian Orthodox Church remains determined to restore all of its desecrated and destroyed holy shrines and thus demonstrate its resoluteness to survive and stay in this region with its people despite all difficulties and challenges.

----------------
The city of Mitrovica derives its name from St. Demetrios (commonly known as Dmitar or Mitar in Serbian). Traditionally St. Demetrios of Thessalonica has been a patron saint of the city since medieval times.

Placement of the crosses was made possible by French KFOR
