Injustice continues - Archbishop Jovan of Ochrid -154 days in Prison

KIM Info-service
December 27, 2005

It has been 154 days that Archbishop Jovan of Ochrid was imprisoned by authorities of FYR Macedonia upon false accusations of the schismatic "Macedonian Orthodox Church". Despite all protests of respectable organizations and individuals throughout the world FYROM authorities turn a blind eye towards maltreatment of a high ranking cleric who spends his days amidst murderers and rapists, deprived of basic human and religious rights. Archbishop Jovan is still denied Holy Communion, the conditions in which he lives are such that his health is rapidly deteriorating. At the same time FYROM authorities together with highly secularized and nationalistic Skopje schismatic clergy continue their campaign of eradicating the Canonical Archdiocese of Ochrid which has been recognized as an only caninical Orthodox Church in the country by all Official Orthodox Churches worldwide.

Persecution of Christian clergy, attacks on their holy sites, denial of basic human and religious rights regrettably continue in a country which hopes to become soon a member of EU.

In order to remember this present day confessor of Christian faith who is imprisoned only because of his religious convictions we all have obligation in these blessed day of the Nativity of Christ to make additional efforts to help him and his faithful, first by our prayers and then also by our appeals and letters to our political representatives, human and religious rights organizations. When you read these lines, instead of writing another Christmas card to your friends, you may send a letter to your Congressman, Senator, MP or even directly write to FYROM authorities requesting freedom for Archbishop Jovan.

We are enclosing the most imporant articles related to the imprisonment of Archbishop Jovan from the Web site:

In the attachment you may find one of the latest statements by the Orthodox Archdiocese of Ochrid.

A HUMBLE PRAYER ON BEHALF OF ARCHBISHOP JOVAN by Archimandrite Nektarios Serfes

Archimandrite Nektarios SerfesHear me O Lord, Hear me as I cry to You within these walls of my imprisonment, whom they took my Gospel, my robes, and my panagia along with my cross.
I walk ashamed without any proper attire as Your loving Hierarch, as they took all my processions.
They cannot take my love for You, or my prayers before You, or my great love for the Holy Orthodox Church!
I am Your servant who believes in You, and the Holy Orthodox Faith we all love.
Humbly I stand almost alone without any further visitors to bring me Your Holy Mysteries.
I sadly am deprived of this great loving blessing too… how I cry within for to be graced with Your great and Holy Mysteries.
No one is allowed to come and pray with me, although I am graced with the presence of my precious and beloved Mother.
I hear the prayers of those who love our Church from far distance in appealing for my release and safety.
These cries and humble appeals go unnoticed at this hour, not one word of
truth has been understood, and more unkind words have been said about me a
poor sinner.
Day by day my imprisonment goes onward, hour by hour I stand not alone!
Your presence, and with Your great blessing, I have accepted Your will and
Your guidance.
I have not lost this precious and humbled love or have neglected my humble
prayers or have neglected my humble prayers before You!
For those whom do not love me, I offer my loving prayers for all!
I pray for my flock and my spiritual children entrusted to me, and send
them assurance that we keep faith, and to love all!
I stand not alone within these walls but with Your grace and peace, and
the light of your blessings shine within me, as well as surround me with
much joy!
Hear me my Lord, watch over all with Your Right Hand and bless all! Your
will is my joy!
May Your great grace and love be with all!
And may the Mother of God protect all!
Have mercy on me my Lord and help me to do Your work in Your Vineyard. Amen

The New “Law on Religious Communities and Religious Groups” of the Republic of Macedonia Contains Obvious Elements of Religious Discrimination and Restrictions Equal to Terror on Religious Grounds

Open Letter
Sent to the Foreign Diplomatic Missions in the Republic of Macedonia and to all the Relevant International Institutions

Your Eminences,
The Macedonian daily newspaper “Vecer” (No. 13025 from 22 October 2005) published an interview with Mr. Jovan Korubin, a professor at the University of Skopje, who composed the new “Law on Religious Communities and Religious Groups”. This interview, parts of which will be quoted, clearly shows that the Government of the Republic of Macedonia, with this new law, not only does it intend to resume its discriminatory politic, but as you will see, it intends to make it even stricter, distancing itself away from the Euro-Atlantic standards of religious freedom.
In the interview, the esteemed professor Jovan Korubin admits that the discriminatory elements in the Law were written under the pressure of some of the state-sponsored religious communities (the Macedonian Orthodox Church, hereinafter MOC). He says: “There are solutions which I might not support completely, and these were made because I had in mind certain requests posed by the religious communities and religious groups themselves. Therefore, the law itself and some of the solutions, I wouldn’t say under pressure, but rather under strong suggestion of the religious communities themselves”.

The Macedonian Authorities Summon to State Terror on Religious Grounds

(reason: the statement for the media made by the Chairman of the Commission for Relations with the Religious Communities and Religious Groups)

Your Excellencies,

The European public is well acquainted with the persecution conducted by the Macedonian authorities over the citizens-members of our religious community, a persecution that resulted in the conviction of the Archbishop Jovan Vraniskovski and his imprisonment in the central Macedonian prison “Idrizovo”. With this act he became the only religious leader in contemporary Europe convicted because of his religious beliefs and for conducting a religious service on a private property. Still, although the Supreme Court, answering to the submitted complaint, declared that these freedoms are guaranteed with the Constitution of our country, as well as with the Universal Declaration and the European Convention for Human Rights, the Archbishop Jovan remains in prison.

PUBLIC APPEAL OF THE HOLY SYNOD OF BISHOPS OF THE SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH

Having waited for three days from the moment of the imprisonment of His Beatitude Archbishop Jovan of Ochrid and Metropolitan of Skopje in the Idrizovo Prison in Skopje in the vain hope that at least some reason would prevail, albeit late, among the officials of the Republic of Macedonia, the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church expresses its greatest bitterness and horror by the decision of the officials of the Republic of Macedonia to send the Head of the Autonomous Archdiocese of Ochrid, which is - we note once again - the only canonical Orthodox Church on the territory of this country - to serve a prison term.

As those who gave the written order resolutely pointed out, the Archbishop kyr kyr John was given time until 26 July 2005, midnight, to appear in the prison Idrizovo.
