Bishop Artemije and Abbot Teodosije of Decani expressed Condolances in their letter to
Kosovo Desk Officers At the US Department of State, Sep 14

Deeply troubled by the recent tragic events in the United States, we are taking this opportunity to express our sincerest condolences. These barbarous and senseless terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, DC are attacks against entire civilized world. We continue praying in our churches and monasteries for the repose of the victims, as well as for those who fight selflessly putting their lives in direct danger to rescue their fellow human beings.
After more than two years of post-war destruction of our churches, cemeteries and our centuries old culture, as well as many terrorist attacks against innocent people in Kosovo, we assure you that our community feels full solidarity with the United States in these moments of grief. We remain hopeful that civilized humanity will firmly stand against this evil of terrorism and religious fanaticism and defend the values on which the European and American civilization are based.

Gracanica, July 3, 2004

Yesterday, on July 2, 2004 the UNESCO World Heritage Committee at a meeting held in Souzhu, China, decided to add the monastery of Visoki Decani to the World Heritage List. The proposal to include Visoki Decani on the list was made by China, Benin, the Russian Federation, Great Britain, Columbia, Nigeria, Norway and Lithuania. None of the 21 members of the Committee opposed the motion.

The Serbia and Montenegro delegation at the 28th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee is comprised of the Serbia and Montenegro ambassador to UNESCO, Dragoljub Najman, and Sanja Kesic-Ristic of the Serbian Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, who prepared the nomination proposal. After the nomination proposal was adopted, Ambassador Najman received congratulations from the ambassadors to UNESCO of France, Germany, China, India and Switzerland.

The nomination proposal was praised by the UNESCO World Heritage Center, ICOMOS (a non-governmental organization providing an expert opinion of all proposed sites) and by the members of the World Heritage Committee as being exceptionally well-prepared.

Visoki Decani Monastery was previously proposed for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994 by the Government of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The Committee decided at that time not to consider the nomination proposal for political reasons. (Yugoslavia was suspended from the UN system at that time.) The most recent monument in Serbia and Montenegro added to the World Heritage List prior to was the monastery of Studenica, added in 1988.
